  • (At Huber Elementary one morning, a classroom door opens and Dexter enters; as he walks, he jumps on his desk then takes his seat)
  • Dexter: (singing) Today is the day, I will pass the test! Pass the test! Pass the test! Today is the day, I will pass the test!
  • (Three of Dexter's classmates are shown; the boy in the back slams his head on his desk, the boy in the middle grits his teeth, and the girl rolls her eyes)
  • Girl: Oh, give me a break.
  • Dexter: You all are just jealous. Right, Miss Wimple?
  • (Miss Wimple, the teacher, is shown; she has beating hearts floating around her)
  • Miss Wimple: Whatever you say, Dexter. You can do no wrong.
  • (Another view of the students is shown; the boy on the far left sits mouth agape and the others, except for Dexter, blink)
  • Dexter: I know!
  • (Miss Wimple sighs; she then realizes something as the hearts floating around her pop)
  • Miss Wimple: Oh my! The test! I hope you are all prepared, (while looking off to her side) like I know my Dexter is.
  • (She blows a kiss toward Dexter; the kiss itself flies toward him and hits his cheek; Dexter then turns around to show an "A+" mark underneath his left cheek; cut back to Miss Wimple; she holds up a stopwatch)
  • Miss Wimple: Okay, class. You may begin the test (presses the button) now.
  • (Several students are shown taking the test; it pans over to Dexter and a boy)
  • Boy: Psst. What's the answer to number one?
  • (Dexter looks at him annoyed, then resumes writing as he covers his paper)
  • Boy: Psst. What's the answer to number one?
  • (Dexter again looks at him annoyed, then resumes writing and covering his paper)
  • Boy: Psst. What's the answer to number one?
  • (Dexter shakes in annoyance)
  • Dexter: (loudly) 287!!
  • (He covers his mouth in embarrassment; a shocked Miss Wimple's legs start to wobble)
  • Miss Wimple: I... I think I'm going to faint!
  • (She faints then falls on her desk)
  • Dexter: Miss Wimple!
  • (He runs over to Miss Wimple, who has popping bubbles flowing out of her, and jumps onto her legs)
  • Miss Wimple: Oh, the disappointment... Not you...
  • Dexter: Miss Wimple! Miss Wimple!
  • (Miss Wimple comes to; she slowly turns her head)
  • Miss Wimple: Dexter, is that you?
  • Dexter: It'll be all right.
  • Miss Wimple: No, it won't be all right. I'll have to give you... (close-up of her lips; her voice echoing) detention.
  • (Dramatic zoom in on Dexter; the background goes black as Dexter then holds onto a set of bars much like a prisoner inside their cell; he then screams as the outside reveals a metallic door with the word "DETENTION" written on it; inside the detention room, a tall shadow engulfs over Dexter; it then reveals a tall, rotund, middle-aged man moving toward Dexter; he then smiles)
  • Detention Warden: You must be Dexter, huh?
  • (Dexter smiles as the warden frowns; he then grimaces as the warden moves away from him)
  • Dexter: Uh, yes. My name is Dexter, but I am not...
  • (The warden holds up a clipboard; several names of the Dexter's Laboratory staff are shown; Dexter's name is between Paul Rudish and Chris Battle)
  • Detention Warden: Well, we'll just check you off then.
  • (He takes a pencil and draws a big check on it, breaking it off in the process; Dexter leaps toward the warden's legs then climbs toward his face)
  • Dexter: No! Please, I was framed! You cannot lock me up! I am innocent!
  • (The warden laughs as he grabs Dexter by the top of his head)
  • Detention Warden: Y'all claim you're innocent, (suddenly becomes angry; a vein appears on the side of his head and his eyes are bloodshot) but you're not!! (as the background fades to black) Y'all make me sick, (close-up on mouth) criminals!
  • (Dexter is then seen sitting with three other boys)
  • Detention Warden: Alright, you little troublemakers. I'm going to give y'all some work. I don't want to hear a peep out of anyone, (cut to his eyes then his mouth) or solitary confinement!
  • (Dexter gulps)
  • Detention Warden: Not a peep!
  • (He forcefully slams the door shut)
  • Dexter: But...
  • (The boy in the orange long-sleeve shirt with a star on it places his hands on Dexter's mouth, then shushes him)
  • (The boy on Dexter's left has a pencil; he then performs Morse Code as Dexter watches)
  • Dexter: Oh, Morse... (muffled) Code!
  • (The boy in the orange shirt again covers Dexter's mouth and, as before, shushes him)
  • (Dexter makes the "OK" hand sign, pulls out a pencil then starts tapping it on the desk)
  • Dexter: (in Morse Code) Of course! Morse Code!
  • Boy 2: (in Morse Code) Right on.
  • (Dexter spins his pencil then continues tapping)
  • Dexter: I'm communicating with Morse Code!
  • (He turns to face a burly, droopy-faced boy behind him)
  • Dexter: (in Morse Code) Hey look! It's Morse Code!
  • (The boy punches Dexter, leaving him with a broken lens, a black eye, and a bruise)
  • Dexter: (in Morse Code) Ouch.
  • (The warden re-enters the detention room with a small brown box underneath his right armpit)
  • Detention Warden: Ah, ya little maggots. I'm proud of ya. Not a peep! However, that does not exempt y'all from your work hours, (close-up of mouth) criminals! Alright now, front and center!
  • (Dexter, the burly boy, the orange shirt boy, and the tall boy all line up in order)
  • Detention Warden: Now then, I have in this box, your work sticks!
  • (He opens the box, revealing four sticks of chalk inside)
  • Detention Warden: And behind you is a chalkboard. And upon that chalkboard, y'all will be writing one thousand times...
  • (As he says the following line, the camera zooms in on his mouth with every word said)
  • Detention Warden: "I... am... a... criminal!" (vein showing) Now!
  • (The boys start writing on the chalkboard; they simultaneously tap their pieces of chalk on the chalkboard, with the chalk screeching as they write out the sentences; it first shows Dexter drawing on the chalkboard; it then shows a bottom view of him continuing to write as small pieces of chalk fall on the floor; a third view follows, with Dexter drawing a straight line; on the fourth time; Dexter is seen drawing a line to finish the letter "A"; the warden's eyes are shown; he moves his eyes from the left to the right as the boys write; the other three boys all draw straight lines; Dexter is then shown looking at his list of sentences, all of which read "I AM A CRIMINAL", the warden then laughs at them in slow motion)
  • (As the boys write their sentences, the warden is seen laying on his desk taking a nap; back at the chalkboard, the burly boy pushes Dexter down, causing him to make a loud screech that startles the warden awake; the boys watch as the warden towers over them; their faces are shown and it pans to Dexter, who was writing the word "CRIMINAL" with the squiggly line leaving to him; he nervously chuckles)
  • (The warden picks Dexter up, turns him around, moves a desk, then opens up a tile in the floor)
  • Detention Warden: Solitary confinement for the (close-up of mouth) criminal!
  • (He forces Dexter inside the hole then closes the tile)
  • Detention Warden: (to the other boys) Now get back to work!!
  • (Cut to Dexter inside the hole) Hmm, how did this happen? This is so unfair! I'm innocent, I'm innocent! (he hyperventilates) Have to get out! (he hugs himself) So quiet, so very quiet. Ahh! Walls closing in! Nowhere to go! (he quickly moves his eyes around) How to escape, how to escape? (he stops then resumes panicking) No way out! No way out! Trapped, trapped like a rat!
  • (A white rat suddenly burrows toward Dexter; it then burrows another hole, with a ray of light flashing on Dexter afterwards)
  • Dexter: Light!
  • (Outside of the cell, the warden is resting)
  • Dexter: Freedom!
  • (The warden is startled awake once more)
  • Detention Warden: I guess it's time to let out the (close-up of mouth) criminal!
  • (He opens the tile on the floor and takes out Dexter, who looks straight on confidently with his arms folded)
  • Detention Warden: Had enough, (close-up of mouth) criminal? Now get back to work!
  • (Dexter stomps toward the boys; he picks up the chalk, performs Morse Code on the chalkboard to explain his escape plan; they look at him happily as Dexter looks out the side of his eye at the sleeping warden; fade to black)
  • (Fade back in; the warden snaps awake and sees the chalkboard filled out; the boys are seen sitting at their desks with their hands together and halos over their heads)
  • Detention Warden: So you all think you're finished, huh? (He points at the boy in the orange shirt) You, small boy, get up here and clean those erasers!
  • (The boy in the orange shirt looks at Dexter, who nods in agreement; the warden stares at him impatiently as his left eye gets bloodshot and bulges out; the small boy runs toward the erasers and grabs them; Dexter nods and the small boy creates a cloud of chalk dust that temporarily covers the screen; once it fades away, the boy is nowhere to be seen)
  • Detention Warden: What?
  • (He sees that the detention room is empty)
  • Detention Warden: This can't be! Huh?
  • (He notices an open tile in the floor; he watches in dismay as Dexter and the other three boys all escape the detention room with Dexter burrowing his way underground)
  • Detention Warden: NOOOOOO!!!
  • (Dexter digs up and opens a tile in another floor)
  • Dexter: We are free!
  • (His happiness is cut short as he looks to his left; a tall, gray-haired man in a blue peacoat and blue boots looks at him)
  • Man: Looks like you broke into the state prison.
  • (An outside view of the state prison is shown as sirens and barking guard dogs are heard; inside, Dexter, who is now wearing a prisoner's uniform, is seen chiseling a rock with a mallet as two prison guards stand over him armed with guns; fade to black)
